A Philosophy of Independence

Montessori in Later Life

A philosophy developed by Dr Maria Montessori. It focuses on freedom of choice, independence, respect and hands-on experiences. It’s about recognising ability and creating environments where people can succeed for themselves. The philosophy, initially developed with children – independence, dignity, purposeful activity – was just as powerful in later life.

Laura Lewin now delivers Montessori-based sessions to older adults, including those living with dementia. Sessions focus on meaningful, hands-on engagement – activities such as pouring, sorting, flower arranging, practical life skills and sensory materials. It’s not about ‘keeping busy’. It’s about preserving independence, supporting retained abilities, and protecting dignity.

Laura works with us to provide something more purposeful than passive activities.

Laura says:

“What I would really like people to understand is that dementia does not take away a person’s need for purpose. The need to feel capable, valued and independent remains. If my work helps even one person feel successful again, then it is worth it.”
